A Mental Health Blog for Everyday Living
Life throws its fair share of challenges our way, from balancing work demands to handling personal relationships. Add mental health struggles to the mix, and the journey can feel even more daunting. It’s often the mundane, everyday hurdles that chip away at our resilience. Whether it’s mustering the energy to follow a self-care routine, battling anxiety in social situations, or combating negative thoughts that prevent sleep, each hurdle can feel insurmountable.
KJ’s Story: Coping with Daily Mental Health Challenges
I’ve lived most of my life facing the challenges of depression, anxiety, and OCD. Growing up in the ’90s, mental illness wasn’t openly discussed, and support services were scarce. As a teenager, I believed my struggles were due to having a bad attitude and being too sensitive, which trapped me in a cycle of negative self-talk that further fed my depression.
The Turning Point: Diagnosis and Early Struggles
After a mental breakdown in my early 20s, I was diagnosed in a hospital with anxiety and severe depression. When I walked out of the hospital, it felt as if I was stepping into a new life. I clutched a few pamphlets a nurse had given to me in my hand. These pamphlets contained just basic information about depression and anxiety—detailing their symptoms and offering a brief overview.
My guide map to this new life was a double-sided pamphlet.
Living with Mental Disorders
My mental disorders had touched every aspect of my life – affecting my sleep, my relationship with my family and my then-boyfriend, my social life, and the career I’d barely begun. I felt like I was an entirely different person, thrust into a different life. Overwhelmed by depression and constant anxiety, I felt hopelessly lost, unsure how to simply survive, let alone truly live. I ended up on a really long waiting list for counselling and to see a psychiatrist. By the time I actually started my sessions, I’d already had two more trips to the hospital for breakdowns. I wasn’t adjusting to this new life very well.
What I Needed
While the pamphlets provided to me by the nurse were helpful and well-intentioned, what I really wanted and needed was a pamphlet about how to LIVE with these disorders. I wasn’t equipped to handle the new situations I found myself in, such as experiencing a sudden panic attack in a crowded restaurant, or explaining to friends that my avoidance wasn’t personal but rather a result of my depression. I wasn’t prepared for the sudden flood of negative emotions and the resulting loss of confidence in myself. I wasn’t ready to let go of who I was before.
The Overwhelming Burden of Everyday Responsibilities
There have been countless times when I’ve felt overwhelmed and exhausted at just the thought of needing to do dishes, laundry, run errands, make dinner. I’d find myself asking, “Why can’t I just get it together? Why is this so hard? Other people do these things with barely a thought or they do it while being a single working parent. So why can’t I do it? It’s just me and my cat for Pete’s sake!” (Cue the guilt and negative thoughts). It’s tough being my age (34) knowing I’m the adult with these responsibilities, and want to run from every single one of them but can’t.
The Gap in Lifestyle Content for Neurodivergent Readers
I see these lifestyle magazines and blogs filled with tips designed to enhance our lives: a chicken casserole that’s supposedly better than your mother’s, ways to save money on cross-country flights, and quizzes to determine compatibility with your significant other. The problem was that these articles are targeted towards neurotypical people.
Definition of Neurodivergent
Refers to individuals whose cognitive functioning or neurological development differs from what is considered typical or neurotypical. This term encompasses a range of conditions and variations, such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive differences. Neurodivergent people experience and process information in ways that may differ from societal norms but are part of the natural diversity of human cognition. The term is often used to highlight that these differences are not necessarily disorders or deficits but variations in how people think and interact with the world.
Definition of Neurotypical
Refers to individuals whose cognitive functioning and neurological development align with what is considered typical or standard within a given society. This term is used to describe people who do not have neurological or cognitive conditions that fall outside the norm. Neurotypical individuals generally follow societal expectations for cognitive and emotional processing and behaviour. The term helps to distinguish between those who have typical cognitive functioning and those who are neurodivergent, emphasizing the diversity in human neurological development.
Navigating Unique Challenges: Why We Need Tailored Lifestyle Advice
Just as people with various challenges approach tasks differently, those of us with mental health struggles often have to navigate unique hurdles. While we can achieve the same goals as neurotypical individuals, the journey may require different strategies and support. I was looking for content that acknowledges and addresses these specific challenges. I wanted lifestyle articles written for someone like me, by someone like me.
Illustrating the Difference
To illustrate this, I’ve created two hypothetical magazines: one is a typical lifestyle magazine offering general advice, while the other is tailored to someone experiencing mental health challenges. This comparison highlights how lifestyle content can be adapted to better support those facing mental health hurdles.
From Blog to Comprehensive Resource
When I started this project, it was just going to be a lifestyle blog. My goal was to create a space specifically for individuals facing mental health challenges, providing them with lifestyle content tailored to their needs. But as I was doing research, I felt there was a need to offer more than just comprehensive resources but free resources, and shop for products designed to support mental well-being—all in one place. While there are certainly websites that cover various aspects of mental health, my vision was to consolidate these elements into a single, cohesive platform. By doing so, readers could easily access the support they need in a format that addresses both their daily life and mental health needs.
Introducing MindSweeper
MindSweeper is a metaphor I created to represent the ongoing process of clearing away negative thoughts and mental clutter. Just as a broom sweeps away dust, this metaphor helps us imagine how we can regularly clear our minds, making room for mindfulness, positivity, and mental clarity. By embracing this concept, individuals become “MindSweepers,” actively working to remove mental barriers and foster a healthier mindset. Becoming a MindSweeper involves developing habits that support mental clarity and emotional well-being, such as practicing mindfulness, engaging in positive self-talk, and seeking support when needed.
The Collective
Mental illness can often make people feel isolated, which is why I created MindSweeper Collective. I wanted to build a supportive community where people can find understanding and compassion while navigating their mental health challenges. This space is dedicated to connecting individuals who share similar experiences, offering a place where they can support one another, share their stories, and find solace in knowing they are not alone. By fostering an environment of empathy and mutual support, MindSweeper Collective aims to combat the isolation that can come with mental illness and provide a sense of belonging and encouragement.
Celebrating Everyday Mental Health Triumphs
Despite society’s focus on triumphant stories of overcoming adversity with clear, satisfying resolutions, the reality of living with mental illness is often far less straightforward. It can feel like making progress one day, only to be set back the next—like taking two steps forward and then three steps back. The journey to mental health is rarely linear, and victories can be small, everyday achievements, such as taking a shower or making a phone call. At MindSweeper, we recognize and celebrate every step of this journey, no matter how small, and we’re here to support you through each and every triumph.
Creating a Judgment-Free Zone for Mental Health
MindSweeper is a space where your struggles are met with understanding and empathy, not judgment. We believe in learning from our mistakes and sharing our experiences, knowing that everyone’s journey includes ups and downs (and believe me, I’ve had plenty).

Reducing Stigma and Misconceptions about Mental Health
We may have different disorders, symptoms and struggles, but we have a unique understanding of one another and deep-rooted compassion. Our community has been divided by stigma and unrealistic “societal norms” for too long. It’s time we work together to reduce stigma and misconceptions, and create a better work and living environment for everyone’s well-being. Together, we can make the world a more inclusive and supportive place.
